Successful Betting Series: A Correct Mindset

Having a bet can make an event more exciting and worth watching. Which is fine if you're betting for entertainment value. However, if your objective is to make your betting pay, then you need to understand the importance of mental and emotional management.

Paul Ruffy over at Betting Profits Bulletin has just posted a really valuable article on the mindset of betting.

I'm a firm believer that once you've gotten betting psychology nailed down, then you're already halfway towards making a profit from betting.

The other tactic I use when perhaps I’m on a series of losers or barren spell is to take a look at the overall picture. That’s why I always create a graph of the running profit/loss for all the parts of my portfolio plus anything I’m paper trading. It gives a visual guide as to how important the actual upturn/downturn is and how relevant it is.

Patterns In The Sand: a guide to speed ratings for all weather horse racing

I'd like to share with you my new book Patterns In The Sand: a guide to speed ratings for all weather horse racing.

Patterns In The Sand

My aim when compiling the book was not only to teach how to compile your own speed figures, but also to show you how you can take those figures and apply them profitably in your betting.

I want to show you how to read those “patterns in the sand”.

FINAL REVIEW: Value At The Races

Lucian at Lay The Odds has just posted a summary of his findings for the Value At The Races service. It's not good news.

Value at the Races

Value At The Races is a tipping service for horse racing, coming from the Winning Information Network.

Read about some of my favourite betting systems at SkyBlueKangaroo.

Is Dettori past it?

With no rides this year in either the Derby or the Oaks, and taking until late May this year to reach ten winners, one could be forgiven for asking - have we seen the best of Frankie Dettori?

Ian writes at Geegeez this week, asking those very questions in a great piece.

Dettori's agent Ray Cochrane says it isn't for want of trying:

Rides in the Derby are very thin on the ground and we’re scratching our heads a bit.

Interview with professional punter Marcel Mavronicholas

Pretty much all of us have at some point entertained the idea of earning our living by betting. This week Stephen over at Betting Expert talks with someone who does just that... Marcel Mavronicholas.

Marcel reveals the bet which gave him his biggest ever win, and also has a pop at bookmakers.

How to develop an intuitive sense for value

Trying to explain the concept of value betting to a betting newcomer is often an exercise in futility. Your newbie betting friend will only accept a bet is a good one if the horse actually wins, and he collects cash from the bookmaker.

Andrew at Betting Expert has posted a comprehensive article on how to develop your own 'sixth sense' when it comes to spotting value.

Sole Power wins Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes York 20.08.2010

In his article Andrew gives a 6-step plan for developing an eye for value.

You don't need to be a maths wiz to be successful betting value long-term. But you do need to understand probability. After all, this is the business. Betting odds represent the probability of a particular outcome and I see far too often people betting in point-blank black and white terms.

Horse Betting Systems and the Acres of Diamonds Story

A comment left by a reader called Carl on one of my recent posts at SkyBlueKangaroo reminded me of an article I wrote a couple of years ago and posted on EzineArticles.

Acres of Diamonds

If you're not familiar with the Acres Of Diamonds story, it's about missed opportunities right on your very own doorstep.

It is only natural to want to be making money from your betting. But the area where many punters struggle, is with discipline and self-control. Most punters are too greedy.

How to improve your profits by 135% when using horseracing tipsters

There's not many of us who haven't considered using tipsters to help us make a profit from betting. I know I certainly have. In fact, as an indirect result of following one particular tipster service, betting on horse racing became an integral part of my life. But that's another story.

Michael Wilding at Race Advisor has written an insightful article which attempts to answer the question "Will tips work for you?"

TIPTEXT

A lot of us want to make money from betting on horse racing but we don't have the time to invest in adequate form study, and so on. So tipsters would seem a viable solution. But to which tipsters should we pledge allegiance, and how do we know which one's are likely to give us a clear return on our investment?

It is not uncommon to only consider how much profit a tipster has been making recently, and how much money you can make. But, if you take a little bit longer then not only will you determine whether the tipster is correct for you, but also you will be on the track to make long-term profits from them!

What's your opinion on tipsters? Share your experiences, good and bad, by leaving a comment below.

When are we in our punting prime?

Are you too old to make your betting pay? Do you lack life-experience enough to be a successful bettor?

Stephen at BettingExpert.co.uk has penned a fascinating article which attempts to answer these questions.

File:Insane old man.jpg

By all accounts we are most likely to make our best betting profits in our early 30s and mid- to late-50s. As a forty-something perhaps I should take a back seat for a while?

30-40yrs: A testing time for all punters and a dangerous one at that where many can fall out of the game because other pressures. Most players have settled down but that brings with it a range of responsibiites, usually financial, that mean risk taking has added impact on other peoples lives and not just your own.

Here's the link to the full article again:

Stephen's article highlights how psychology and particularly maturity can have a profound influence on your betting success. Follow this link to read more articles about betting psychology.

FINAL REVIEW: Triple H Horseracing

Over at Betting System Truths Colin has just posted his final review of the Triple H Horseracing system. This betting system is produced by Steve Davidson, but written by the mysteriously-named 'Zen'. No comment.

Read the review here:

TripleH Triple H Horseracing Final Review

It's quite an involved betting system, and apparently it'll take around 90 minutes of your time each day before racing.

Overall, the selections were very profitable, and using the recommended staking plan we turned a 300 point bank into 449 points.

So all told, what was Colin's verdict on this betting system?

Aiden O’Brien – Classic trainer

Ian at GeeGeez reflects on the recent Classics Double achieved by trainer Aidan O'Brien.

Aidan O'Brien plans big raid on Australia

Some will see this weekend’s events as restoring the natural order of things, with the top races going to one of the stables with the bid money behind it.

Aidan O'Brien's success when measured in terms of Classics wins can only be described as nothing short of a 'production line'. The best trainer ever? What do you think?

What is value?

This is the first in a series of articles by Michael Wilding at Race Advisor that focus on value in odds and the reasons for its importance.

I'm a firm believer that if you aspire to make your betting pay long term, then you must have a firm grasp of the concept of value betting. The series of articles will first look at the basics, before delving into the mathematics.

Without value in odds it is impossible to make a profit. This is not just me giving my opinion but a mathematical fact and if you can understand the concepts of it then you are going to be in a very strong position.

The Punting Confessional: Coping With Losing Runs

The GeeGeez horse racing blog published by Matt Bisogno is currently running a brilliant series called the 'PuntingConfessional'. One of the latest episodes, penned by Tony Keenan, is titled Coping With Losing Runs and well worth a read, especially if you're currently the slings and arrows of a disastrous run of losing bets.

McCarthy knows all about losing runs...

Being able to mentally manage a poor streak of losing results is part and parcel of betting psychology.

The first thing to know about losing streaks is they are inevitable; this doesn’t make them any easier to handle but it should somewhat leaven the feeling of failure they bring.

If you want to read my own take on coping with losing runs I wrote a post a while back. It also includes a handy ready-reckoner to show you the longest losing run you can expect, given a specific win strike rate. Read it here [...]

Beaten Females - Final Review

John at Lay The Odds has finished his review of the Beaten Females laying system.

Beaten Females

It is not a positive review.... and they've put the system in the 'failed' drawer.

Although it made a small profit using level stakes it made quite a big loss using the advised staking plan so I have put Beaten Females in the failed section.

FINAL REVIEW: HRS Laybot Pro

The 'System Mason' Malcolm Pett gives us his review of HRS Laybot Pro over at HorseRacingSystemsUK.

Camelot - Doncaster 22.10.2011

This review may be academic as according to the vendor Jason Franklin there are only 200 copies of this product to be made available.

I have always advocated the idea of looking at systems and seeing if you can find a way to make them more profitable (or just plain profitable).

What Is Value Handicapping and How Can It Help You to Win More

Bill Peterson is a former race horse owner, and a professional race analyst Stateside. He's just posted a superb article on value handicapping which although written for the American racing market, translates readily to betting in the UK.

Expert Author Bill Peterson

Bill starts off by indentifying the difference between betting 'for thrills' and betting for profit.

First of all, even though this sounds academic, let's get it out of the way. "It's about the money."
